Statement of Opposition to the Recall of
Elected Members of the Santa Cruz City Council

An aggressive, well-funded, and misleading circulation of petitions has managed to qualify enough signatures to place an inappropriate recall election on the March 2020 ballot. The Stop the Santa Cruz Recalls Steering Committee will campaign tirelessly to persuade voters to vote no on the recall of City Council members Drew Glover and Chris Krohn. Elected officials should serve the full terms of office for which they were chosen in regular, democratic elections unless there has been significant wrongdoing. Such wrongdoing has not been substantiated. We have faith that voters in our community want policy differences resolved by a City Council where diverse voices represent the wonderful diversity of our City. We have faith that voters will reject the recall.

The recall election has the unfortunate potential to be a divisive and distracting sideshow from the important issues that the City faces – affordable housing, homelessness, the local ramifications of climate crisis, building a vital and just economy, public safety, and sustainable transportation. We look forward to defeating the recall so that all our elected members of the City Council can focus on working hard and working together in a new era of reconciliation, civility, and progress.
